The theory was that reading backwards makes it impossible for the brain to "assume" what's coming next (think of those cutesie Facebook posts where sentences are garbled but you can still read them because the basic word pattern is intact). I tried it. It will make you bat-crap crazy.

One trick I've found that helps me maintain a consistent voice for my characters is to go through and read only the dialogue for the selected character. Make a pass for each of the main characters.

I agree completely with chunk editing.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01022301845334739882noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5305781781926228329.post-68202722646167115462012-09-21T12:48:34.892-07:002012-09-21T12:48:34.892-07:00A great approach. Theme, plot, major characters, consolodate scenes then go into the nitty gritty of dialogue, description, wordchoice , spelling and punctuation.

at least this way, you know what you've accomplished with each pass!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10813552261016651108noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5305781781926228329.post-11977436790796715392012-09-18T13:06:46.138-07:002012-09-18T13:06:46.138-07:00To be honest, I like revisions...at least the firs...To be honest, I like revisions...at least the first 100 times through. I find the initial draft the hardest. But I do try to tackle revisions in chunks. Focusing on a character, then another, then another. And then go through the book to look at setting, dialogue, etc. It was never as well thought out as you described above, but along those lines. I think as I finish the second draft of my current book, I'll be more meticulous about the rewriting strategy. It will be less daunting. Thanks for the suggestions!Billhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13086862313741891234noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5305781781926228329.post-5084733797391082712012-09-18T10:38:25.814-07:002012-09-18T10:38:25.814-07:00Great advice!
