Laura Howard: Six Questions with Kendall Grey

Six Questions with Kendall Grey

This series is going to typically be a Six Question Saturday post. But, I have a friend who has something really cool going on that I had to be a part of.

Kendall Grey has published two books to date, with a third coming soon. The funny thing about Kendall is that she doesn't sell her books because she needs the money, but because she likes to share her stories.

ALL profits from the sales of her urban fantasy romances INHALE and EXHALE will be donated to programs that educate people about whales and the challenges they face.

So, of course I had to do a little feature on her to help the WHALES!!

1. If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?

I don't have a mentor per se, but there are a lot of amazing writers
who've helped me along my journey. My crit partners (Erin Grace, Lynn Rush, Brenda Nelson-Davis especially) were instrumental in getting my stories cleaned up, and they've also been great supporters. I'm so lucky to have them!

2. If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your books?

Yeah, totally! Every time I open one of my published books, I see something wrong. "Oh, look, I used that word 3 times on this page," or "That sentence sounds awkward." I'm such a perfectionist. My husband has taught me to let things go. I can't dwell on every little nitpick--I'd never publish anything if I did.

3. Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?

There are loads of fresh new voices out there. So much emerging talent! I'm ashamed to admit I rarely read, so I can't recommend any new books, but I've bought a ton. My Kindle overflows with titles by Colin Barnes, Laura Diamond, Alan Edwards, Rachel Firasek, Belinda Frisch, Karina Halle, Tiffany King, Evelyn Lafont, J.A. McCorkle, Berinn Rae, Elle J Rossi, Lynn Rush, and Lori Whitwam to name a few.

4. Are your books based on someone you know, or events in your own life?

A lot of the events in my books are taken directly from real-life experiences I've had with whales. I wish I could claim I had a sexy Australian rock star boyfriend, but hotties like that steer clear of me. Can't imagine why. ;-)

5. Do you have anything specific you would say to your readers if you could?

If you want a smart urban fantasy romance that challenges you to think, the JUST BREATHE Trilogy might be for you. A ton of research went into these books. The world-building is very complex. There's stuff about whales, the theory of the collective unconscious, Elemental politics. The books contain hot sex too. A reader labeled INHALE "intelligent smut," which I think is totally appropriate. :-) Oh, and these books are FOR ADULTS ONLY. Graphic sex, language, and violence abound.

Who designed these amazing covers?

Claudia McKinney from Phat Puppy Art. She does fantastic work.
I'm so proud of all three covers!

Don't you LOVE WHALES!!!??? Inhale is only .99!!! You should buy it. For The Whales.

Yeah, and then you should tell your friends. For The Whales.

  3. I haven't read any of Kendall's books. However, the fact that she gives her $ to programs to educate humans about whales is a huge soft spot for me. I have had a long fascination of all whale species - dolphins are part of the whale family. They are unbelievably gentle, intelligent giants, & family-oriented. They are not the Moby Dicks.

"Intelligent smut?" That's another big turn-on! Kendall's first book will be going into my Kindle.

Thanks, Laura, for the interview. Although, I anticipated a question on why her love of whales. What is it about whales that she feels called to help them?

  4. There is a reason for that, actually. Monique! This is the second interview I have done with Kendall. I tried to ask new questions from the first time, to keep things fresh! Her first interview is an audio!
