Laura Howard: Throwback Thursday

Throwback Thursday

Throwback Thursday is a weekly event hosted by Take Me Away
Throwbacks can be:
a book you've read and loved, or a book you've always wanted to read
a book that brings back memories for you
from as far back as your childhood, or just from last year
a classic or a hidden gem
My choice is my all time Favorite Book from my childhood:
The Witch of Blackbird Pond
I first read this book for a summer reading list when I was about 10 years old.  Even at such a young age, I had visions of being swept away by a fine, young sailor named Nat.  But, seriously this book was unforgettable!  It's about a young, free-spirited girl named Kit who was raised by  her grandfather in Barbados.  When he dies, she is sent to live with her religious aunt in America.  When she arrives, she seems to always do the wrong thing, causing suspicion and fear.  She finds a friend in the local outcast Hannah and before long   people are suspecting that her impulsive ways are those of a "witch".  This book introduced me to reading and I think inspired me to be a life-long reader!
What was your favorite book as a child/teenager?  Leave a comment and let me know!

  1. confession: i've never read the harry potter series. (i know, i'm lame) so i guess that's on my to-be-read list.
otherwise, there are too many to name from my childhood.

  2. I read the HP series to my kids in 2009 so I'm late in the game but they are soon
    Worth it!

  3. Hi Laura! I enjoyed your comment on the Bookshop Talk blog post about how literature impacts our lives. I was so shy, too! Books (particularly ones with strong, courageous heroines) were (and still are) my escape! I decided to "find" you online to learn more about your book tastes. I've decided that we need to be friends. :)

This is a great post. "Throwback Thursday"--what a fun idea! And oh, how I love THE WITCH OF BLACKBIRD POND! Wasn't Nat wonderful?

I loved lots of books when I was a kid (still do), but I think my favorites were Robin McKinley's BEAUTY, Frances Hodgson Burnett's THE SECRET GARDEN, and Dickens's A CHRISTMAS CAROL. The last two are still among my all-time favorites. That makes it sound like I don't love BEAUTY anymore, but I do--it's just that I'm an old married lady now, so mysterious Beasts don't thrill me like they used to. :) I am a Potter generation girl, but I really got into the books in my early twenties, so while they are also huge favorites of mine, I can't say that I loved them in my childhood.

  4. Hi Kim! Nice to meet ya! If I could figure out how to get my link for Goodreads on here, I'd invite you over!

  5. I just read "The Witch of Blackbird Pond" this year for Book Banned Week and I really enjoyed it. I don't think I would as 4th grade me. It's a bit slow and lot of allusions/symbolism I think I would miss out on.

Fav childhood reads include the Ramona series by Beverly Clearly and Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. I absolutely loved both and still remember it fondly today.
